Your pet is your family, and we believe that bond is worth celebrating. Here at Underdog Photo Studio we specialize in photographic pet portraiture that turns your best friend into art. As a full service studio, not only do we know how to work the camera and sling the treats to capture stunning portraits of your pets, we also have the expertise to transform those pixels into functional artwork that accentuates your home. Whether you're looking to put a masterpiece on your wall or a beautiful folio box on your shelf, we're here to make sure your pet is seen as they were meant to be seen - as art that's as fine as they are.
We start with a complimentary 10-15 minute phone call to get to know you and your pet and talk about our studio and services.
Zero pressure or commitment - we'll just chat to see if we're a good fit for your fur family!
A 30 minute Zoom video call to plan out your portrait session, taking place 1-2 weeks before the event.
We'll discuss and plan your vision, artwork goals, backdrop options, session details, and - of course - your pet!
A 1-2 hour photographic portrait session, held at either our Westside Santa Cruz pop-up studio or in the comfort of your own home.
We'll also have artwork product samples on hand for you to see and experience in person.
The big reveal! A 60-90 minute Zoom video call where we unveil your professional pawtraits, taking place within 2 weeks of your session.
With the help of fancy preview technology, we'll guide you in selecting the perfect artwork products to fit your home. Within 12 weeks of the ordering session, you'll be holding fine art of your pet in your hands!

Let's get to know each other
Hi, I'm Kate! As the photographer behind Underdog Photo Studio, I'm here to capture your pet not only on camera, but also in high quality artwork to adorn your home and cherish your bond forever. Our photography sessions are all about celebrating your pet and bringing out their unique personality - that means the treats flow, the bellies are rubbed, and the zoomies are zoomed. Your pet is the star of the show and we're here to make sure they know it.
A 1-2 hour photographic portrait session held at either our Westside Santa Cruz pop-up studio (Westside Session) or in the comfort of your own home (At-Home Session). During our Discovery Call and Planning Session, we'll discuss which option best fits you and your pet's needs.
Each session is custom-tailored to you and your pet, and includes 2 backdrop colors and use of charming props to bring out your pet's character. We'll focus on capturing your pet's unique personality - whether she's dignified royalty or he's a bouncy goofball - through a fun, stress-free experience.
All family members living within the same household - both furry and human! - are welcome to participate in the session. Any human children must be over the age of 4 years old.

They don't have to! Very few pets are perfect models, but we have a lot of tricks up our sleeve to help capture them at their best. In fact, we regularly work with untrained shelter dogs, so not much surprises us! As long as your pet is motivated by treats or toys we can still get nice portraits of them - whether they're sitting pretty or bouncing off the walls.
Your pet's comfort is our number one priority. We always move at your pet's pace and respect their signals, with a slow and gentle introduction to the studio, lights, and photographer. Most pets - even shy and nervous ones - acclimate to the experience and do just fine. If you're not sure how your pet would handle a session, please reach out and we'll give you an honest assessment.
We're also excited to soon be able to offer an even quieter experience for sound-sensitive pets with special lighting - join our Underdog Pack to be the first to hear when we have this special equipment available.
Nope, we like our dogs free and naked! We hold our sessions in enclosed spaces - whether in our studio or your home - so your pup can be safely off-leash. We only ever use leashes if strictly necessary.
During our Discovery Call and Planning Session we'll chat with you to determine which studio session would be the right fit for you and your pet. However, please note that At-Home sessions require a minimum 12x12' indoor space with access to power, such as a rearranged living room or empty garage. We also generally require At-Home sessions for cats, as our feline friends are most comfortable on their home turf.
All pets who are members of your household are welcome to participate in the session. We'll photograph each pet individually, and attempt group shots if your pets are willing! However, please reach out if you have more than 3 pets - while we're happy to take the time to capture everyone, most pets will be tuckered out by a session that's extended too long.
Yes! In fact, we encourage you and other members of your household to join your pets in some of the photos, which is why we're happy to take the extra time at no additional charge - we're here to immortalize your bond with your pet after all! Please note that any human children must be over the age of 4 years old for safety.
Nope! While dogs and cats are our most common clients, we're open to working with other small animals as well. In fact, if you have a bird, reptile, or small mammal you'd like to book a session for, please reach out to us - we may even be able to offer you a special portfolio builder gift.
Unfortunately we do not photograph large animals like horses at this time.
We're so sorry, we never get enough time with our beloved fur family. Yes, we offer Rainbow Sessions for pets who are terminally ill. These are the same as our standard studio sessions, but we waive the session fee and prioritize our schedule to squeeze you in as soon as possible. Please note that we do require a diagnosis from your veterinarian for Rainbow Sessions. These special sessions are reserved for terminally ill pets; we hold our standard studio sessions for senior pets, tailored to their energy level and needs.
Yes. However, we're a full-service portrait studio that specializes in creating custom, museum-grade artwork of your pets. We find that when we sell digital files, the photos tend to make a few rounds on social media and then collect digital dust, lost in a long-forgotten folder on your phone or computer. We want you to enjoy your art as it was meant to be enjoyed - as a tangible masterpiece that lasts a lifetime! But we also understand that we live in digital world, which is why we include a complimentary high-resolution digital file of every photo we retouch for your purchased artwork.
